October 29th, 2007 — Golf Blog Posts from USGA Blog @ USGA Blog
I got an up close and personal view of Tiger Woods’ unprecedented three consecutive U.S. Amateur victories. With each win, promotion of the Amateur got easier and easier.
NBC definitely struck gold when it televised the last two rounds of the 1996 Amateur. Woods didn’t disappoint. His incredible comebacks over Trip Kuehne (1994) and Steve Scott (1996) created dramatic theater, and with history on the line in 1996, Woods displayed the kind of talent and shot-making that he now demonstrates as a professional.
Nike president Phil Knight was among the 14,000 spectators who walked the fairways at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club in Oregon for the 36-hole championship final in ‘96. And when the match concluded, I overheard someone from the outside management team unjustly take credit for the excitement and spectator interest that Woods had single-handedly created.
“Well, I’d say we did a great job getting everyone out here, don’t you think,” he asked then-USGA president Judy Bell.
Never shy, Bell turned and let the man have it right between the eyes. “My dog Spot could have done this,” she shot back.
But Bell liked what she saw, nonetheless. And before she left office, she helped the USGA media relations department secure annual funds for promotions, with the hope of drawing thousands to future USGA amateur championship finals.
Oh, we’ve had some successes to be sure.
In my 18 years with the USGA, I’ve witnessed clubs that have invited high school marching bands to play; some that have bartered for billboards around town and others that have leaned on a celebrity member to be a spokesperson.
But in each case, it has been the host club that has taken a few good promotional ideas and made them work. There is no one size fits all, when it comes to promotions. But it all starts with the host club’s enthusiasm.
This coming weekend, the media relations staff will host its 13th Amateur Championships Preview Weekend, where all of the host clubs will share ideas and get a running start toward putting on a good championship next summer.
Erin Hills in Wisconsin will be hosting its first USGA championship with the U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links, while Eugene (Ore.) Country Club is welcoming the U.S. Women’s Amateur only a couple years after hosting the U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur.
But, either way, the visitors will learn about advance marketing and promotions that might be right for them. We want everyone to catch the spirit of one of our 13 National Championships. We want to help each club create a buzz and as many spectators as possible out to watch the best amateur golfers compete on some of the country’s best golf courses.
And if there’s a USGA championship in your area next summer, get out to the site to see amateur golf at its very best.
I’ll bet we could get 14,000 fans to an Amateur final again if Tiger Woods would just get his amateur status back. What do you think?
Craig Smith,
USGA Director of Media Relations
